Remedies of Itching

By My Name at 2009-12-02 00:59:25
The word itch is derived from the Latin word Pruritus. Itch is an unpleasant tingling sensation, which evokes the need to scratch. It can be very discomforting and frustrating and can happen at any time. In severe cases itching can result in sleeplessness, depression and anxiety. It is therefore a complex process that usually occurs when some nerves react to a certain kind of chemicals like histamine, which release in the skin. On the other hand, itching can also be a result of a skin disease, any internal disorder or in some cases, it is seen to be due to the faulty dispensation of the itch sensation within the nervous system.

Sometimes the desire to itch is so strong that a person after scratching leaves a rash or a deep wound on his skin. This happens when the rough scratching from the nails of the person ruptures the two layers of the skin known as epidermis and the dermis. To avoid further itching and discomfort, an effective topical gel can be used. If the wound is not that deep then the usual process of wound healing starts itself, but it is recommended to use the ointment as it promotes moist healing. Depending upon the severity of the rash or the wound then an appropriate antibiotic or a steroid creams could be used prescribed by the doctor. If the itching persists to continue after the wound healing process has been completed, anti-histamines could be used or a medical advice should be taken.

The good news is there are a lot of eczema ointments, lotions, and creams that will provide relief. The bad news is they all may not work for you, or they may have side effects, depending on which ones you choose. Topical pharmaceutical creams will give relief almost instantly. However, they are generally cortisone-based and have adverse side effects when used long term. They can thin your skin and suppress your immune system - not good things.

One of the worst symptoms that many genital herpes sufferers experience is a terrible itching in the genital area. It is particularly bad at the height of an outbreak, when the genital area can be covered in a rash or sores, and scratching can spread or prolong an outbreak, and just generally add to the unpleasantness of the whole experience. Finding a way to relieve this itching can make an outbreak a little easier to get through, and by not scratching you can accelerate healing time. If you suffer from the itch and manage to avoid scratching through sheer willpower, you may be horrified to know that you might be scratching unconsciously during sleep, so a few tips for relieving the genital herpes itch should be of some use to you as well.

This one is a real life saver, and has become one of my main methods of dealing with the pain and discomfort of a herpes outbreak. Add a cup or two of Epsom salts to a hot bath (as hot as you can stand, but be careful and don't burn yourself!) and soak for 20 minutes or so. Your sores may sting a little going in, but this will soon give way to a beautiful soothing feeling as the salts get to work on your lesions. This method not only cleans the sores and helps them heal faster, but also reduces pain, itching, swelling and inflammation. I've also heard adding a spoon or two of baking soda to the Epsom salts can make it even more effective.

However sometimes these treatments fail to heal vaginal irritation and itching even after being prescribed several rounds of these type treatments. In cases where women are prone to regular yeast infections, conventional medicines such as these will simply stop working, as Candida will grow resistant to them. For a treatment to be successful, the cause of yeast infection needs to be identified and treated and not just the symptoms alone.

Luckily there is an alternative treatment that addresses the root cause of the infection and the symptoms. A natural treatment is based on using natural and herbal remedies such as garlic, tea tree oil and vinegar - to bring fast relief to vaginal itching and irritation within hours. For long term effectiveness a Candida free diet should be considered to stop yeast infections from recurring again. In the meantime avoid wearing tight clothing and use cotton undies instead of nylon or other synthetic material.

Symptoms of a vaginal infection include:

* Itching Unpleasant smell (BV has a fishy odour, Candida does not usually smell but may have a yeasty odour)
* Pain during sex
* Red inflamed vulva
* Abdominal pain
* Bleeding after sex
* Pain when passing urine
* Abnormal vaginal discharge

Because the symptoms of BV and Candida are similar, it is important to consult your Doctor to ensure the right infection is treated. There are several things you can do at home to help ease the discomfort of vaginal itching.

1. Wear loose fitting clothes and cotton underwear. Synthetic and tight fitting clothes can make you hot and sweaty which encourages the infection.
2. Do not use perfumed soaps, bath products, vaginal deodorants or antiseptics. These products aggravate the skin which is already sore. Use only plain water to wash
3. Use cold water or ice wrapped in cloth to soothe the itching. Do not apply ice directly to your skin!
4. Natural yoghurt applied directly to the area can soothe itching and help fight yeast infections
5. A warm salt water bath helps kill off infection
6. Aloe Vera gel is naturally soothing
7. Stop the burn when you pass urine by pouring warm water over your vulva while you pee.
