A growing concern, prescription drug abuse is more common than you might think, with 20% of Americans estimated having used drugs for non-medical purposes, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse. Modern medicine is rightly celebrated for its contribution to curing and treating countless diseases, from polio to cancer, but even properly prescribed medication is susceptible to abuse and addiction.

Prescription drug abuse is a growing epidemic, and part of the reason for this is the ease with which these drugs are able to be obtained. Shockingly, the amount of people prescribed painkillers has risen from 40 million to 180 million in just 16 years from 1991 to 2007. Drugs containing hydrocodone, such as Vicodin, and painkillers, such as oxycontin, and are more likely to cause addiction, and some people who get addicted to these prescription drugs will go to the same lengths to get them as people who are addicted to illegal drugs like heroin and cocaine.

An addiction to drugs on the other hand is something different in that a person goes through actual pain and trauma when they do not get their fix of the drug. They can experience things like uncontrollable shaking, nausea, and even insomnia to name a few. Lots of the drugs out there mess with the way that the brain function and alter it to where it cannot function correctly without the drug.People who are addicted to drugs, will use the drug no matter what type of adverse health reactions they get from doing so. This behavior causes them to have complete disregard for their personal health as long as I get that next high or head change and that they need.|For these people quitting really isn't a very easy option for them. This is a time when a person's drug abuse becomes an addiction and it must be addressed and dealt with.

Causes

As a therapist I see many from dysfunctional families deal with pain through some form of excessive behavior. This can be a cause of drug abuse, but also it may manifest as an eating disorder, promiscuity, constant job changing or thrill seeking.Personally I think nothing actually can "cause" us to do something . If we've been fortunate to have some good role models or mentors in our lives from neighbors, relatives or teachers then a challenging situation may be met with a certain degree of will power and stamina. This is why education, positive influences and inspiring books can be helpful in changing our lives. On the other hand, when we've been around people and family with poor coping mechanisms who use anger, alcohol and drugs, blame and avoidance to face adversity, we aren't shown ways to transform tough situations into personal growth.

Social drinking is very popular all over the world. A glass of wine or beer while eating is common in many houses or restaurants. Weddings, birthdays, are usually celebrated with a glass of champagne. Going out for a drink after work is considered a normal way to end the day. But there is a huge difference between social drinking and alcohol abuse. Unfortunately, driving while drunk and increased violent behavior are very common for people in this situation.

Although one glass will never be a problem, the alcohol abuse is a major problem and the consequences are serious. Alcohol abuse causes damage not only to your own health, but to your loved ones, and to the society where you live. The numerous cases of domestic violence and innocent deaths which come up every year show us how dangerous can be the alcoholism. Alcohol is a drug, and alcohol abuse is as real as drug abuse. The rehabilitation is as serious as drug rehabilitation, and withdrawal can be deadly.What are the underlying causes of drug and alcohol abuse? And why do you need to know? If you're trying to solve a drug or alcohol abuse problem, wouldn't it be a good idea to find out first what's causing it? Obvious question right, well maybe not so. Perhaps knowing about the cause to drug abuse is the first step to solving the problem.

Many also celebrate their special days like birthday, wedding day, etc. with some champagne. And meeting up with friends or near ones for a quick drink after working hours is another form of the aforementioned. It is very different from alcohol abuse. People who are into such abuse are mostly the ones getting caught for drunken driving, violent and crazy behavior.Though the intake of alcohol in a lesser quantity and frequency may not create major problems, the consequences of the abuse are severe. Alcohol addicts often forget the fact that it causes pain and damage not only to them, but also to their family and surroundings they are staying. The alarming rise of domestic violence, suicides, innocent deaths, etc. is caused mainly by alcoholism. Remember that this is one form of drug that is as bad as a drug abuse. The seriousness of rehabilitation remains the same in both of them. The withdrawal from such abuse can also become deadly.
